A recent study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine finds that taking Nexium may also improve overall health in patients with heartburn. The study found that a single daily dose of Nexium improved quality of life for nearly 1 in 5 patients with mild to moderate heartburn.
The study, by Dr. Nachumot, involved more than 2,000 patients with mild to moderate heartburn who were assigned to either a standard 20 mg dose of Nexium or a 20 mg dose of omeprazole. The study found that the 20 mg dose improved symptoms of heartburn, including burning, itching, and a persistent sense of burning at the source, as well as improved acid-related function in the lower esophagus, stomach, and small intestine, among patients who were taking the 20 mg omeprazole dose.
“The results of the study suggest that taking Nexium may help people with heartburn with minimal side effects,” Dr. Nachumot said in a statement. “This finding is particularly important given the need for heartburn control in patients with mild to moderate heartburn. It also highlights the importance of early treatment with Nexium in patients with mild to moderate heartburn.”
The study was funded by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, the maker of Nexium, a brand name of Prilosec, a prescription drug used to treat heartburn and acid regurgitation.
In 2017, AstraZeneca, the maker of Nexium, announced that it was seeking approval for its Nexium brand for use in treating heartburn. The brand has been on the market since 2012 and is now available in over 150 countries.
“Nexium is a well-established medication for the management of heartburn,” said Dr. Nachumot in the statement. “We are excited to offer Nexium to patients with mild to moderate heartburn who are seeking relief from the discomfort associated with this discomfort.”
The study also included a small group of patients with mild to moderate heartburn, whose symptoms were not adequately controlled by other treatments. The researchers also found that the 20 mg omeprazole dose improved symptoms of heartburn in patients with mild to moderate heartburn.
The study was conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, a biopharmaceutical company based in San Diego, California.
